"...Job statistics indicate that the average person changes careers three to five times during a lifetime." Coxford, Lola
Where's the Work?
Countless of us look for a job without a clear idea of what kind of work we want. We expect the human resources director somehow to determine our strengths and put us in the correct position. Then we expect our boss to recognize our abilities and promote us.
I guarantee that for every 100 companies where you say, "I would like a job, and I don't really know what kind of work I prefer, but I'm a hard worker and I can learn fast," at least 95 will consider you for "female jobs" only.
Too many women are willing to settle for this decision. We are comfortable in a task-oriented environment. We are surrounded by women who follow many of the rules we have learned. We are convinced that we will learn what we need to know and be promoted from where we are. Often we are promoted, which only reinforces our expectations. What we don't realize is that we are stuck driving in the slow lane, while others have moved into the passing lane. Somehow we know the difference is reflected in our paychecks.
