T.I.P.S. - To Improve Pay and Success
Improving Profitability
The job positions held by women often don't expose them to the
entire corporate picture. It is easy to forget that profit is an
overriding goal. However, women often work where we see blatant
inefficiencies. We owe it to our employers and ourselves to suggest
improvements.
As you read this, you can probably think of ways that things could
be done differently to positively impact cash flow (see Each of
Us, chapter 5,) save time, or reduce paperwork. Don't complain
about these inefficiencies. They will become your allies.
Formulate a plan of suggestion. Try to determine the potential
impact on profits if your plan is adopted. This might take some
research, but it is worth it. If you are saving time, calculate
how much time will be saved and what that time is worth. If you
can bring money in sooner, or keep it longer, calculate the days
gained and the time value of money.

Present this in the form of a suggestion, never a complaint. Present
it to someone who has the capacity to implement change, and make
the presentation when you have his/her attention. This may require
an appointment. Don't make this suggestion in front of a bunch
of your peers.
Be careful to pull this off correctly. You may
be trying to change a process that was created by the person
you are talking to, or the company's founder. You need to be
sensitive to this. You also want to appear knowledgeable and
helpful, without appearing controlling. "I've
observed an inefficiency for awhile now and decided to look into
alternatives. I really think we could make a difference with a
change here."
If (when) your plan is implemented, capitalize on it. Use this
as a bargaining chip when you want more responsibility or more
money. Your value to the corporation has been increased. Awareness
is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
