T.I.P.S. - To Improve Pay and Success
Self Blame and Self Esteem
I recently read the results of a study done
on children. They found that when things go wrong for very young
boys, they are likely to blame the circumstances or the objects
they are playing with. "Dumb
wall hurt my head." or "Stupid toy doesn’t work
right." Very young girls, on the other hand, were likely to
blame themselves. "I’m so uncoordinated." or "I
can’t work this toy." While we want to be aware of this
as we interact with our daughters, I believe this phenomena is
present in adult boys and girls also.

There is enough pressure at work without putting
additional blame on ourselves. Too often when something doesn’t
go right, we think of all the ways we could have created a different
outcome, and blame ourselves because we did not. Meanwhile, those
around us might be blaming the circumstances and moving on to
the next project. Of course we need to be accountable for the
results of our actions, but too much self-blame will debilitate
us.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter why things didn’t
work out as planned. The only important thing is to make the
best of it and move forward. It is much harder to do this if
we lose confidence through inappropriate self-blame. Awareness
is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
